Wise philanthropy at JBS Foundation begins with a deep-seated commitment to three core principles. Since its creation in 2004, JBS has supported local charities and healthcare organizations who are having an impact on their communities. JBS does this through adherence to strategic, targeted and purposeful giving. The JBS board defines these principles in the following way:
Strategic: Long-term, comprehensive planning for maximum impact.
Targeted: Directing funds to board-approved, specific, high-priority areas.
Purposeful: Ensuring grants are meaningful and aligned with the values of JBS and the recipient organizations.
OUR VISION: Positive change and significant impact on the people in our communities.
OUR MISSION: To engage Canadian charities in the areas of Healthcare and Community Services to deliver measurable impact.
OUR CORE VALUES: Compassion, Responsibility, Respect, and a Commitment to Meaningful Work guide the JBS board in its support of qualified charities in Canada.
Compassion: We are dedicated to understanding and addressing the needs and struggles of those in our communities.
Responsibility: We are dedicated to actively improving our local neighbourhoods.
Respect: We are dedicated to honouring the dignity and worth of every individual through a culture of inclusivity and equity.
Commitment to Meaningful Work: We are dedicated to making a tangible, positive impact for the staff and beneficiaries of the charities we support.
These values profoundly shape the philanthropic culture within the JBS Foundation. They influence and guide our mission, decision-making, and interactions in the charitable sector and its grantees.
JBS funds projects in two broad sectors, each with several subsectors:
HEALTHCARE:
A portion of JBS funding goes to funding projects and programmes in the general area of healthcare, including:
COMMUNITY SERVICES:
This sector covers a wide array of concerns, including:
Caring for our neighbourhood – one cause at a time
JBS Foundation gives priority to the communities where we live. The focus of JBS funding is to agencies and charities in Southern Ontario. The board also considers regionally impactful projects in the Sea to Sky Corridor of British Columbia, and in Northern Ontario.
OUR GIVING GUIDELINES:
We fund organizations that are accountable to an independent board of directors.
We will fund a project or organization after reviewing that organization’s financial statements.
Do you think that your project or programme may be the type of initiative that JBS Foundation would consider funding? If so, please read carefully this four-stage process:
STAGE ONE: Complete the simple ‘Getting to know you’ form (click the button below) which allows us to acquire some very preliminary information about your organization and your project. This will help us determine potential eligibility.
STAGE TWO: Our staff will review the information and discuss it with several members of the JBS Board who will determine if a more complete application and follow-up conversation is appropriate. If so, you will be contacted by email.
STAGE THREE: If your project appears to meet our criteria, we will send you a more thorough application form which you must complete, including a detailed budget, along with your latest audited financial statement, proof of registration as a Canadian charity and a list of your board members. ONLY ONLINE APPLICATIONS ARE ACCEPTED BY JBS FOUNDATION. The submission of an application form and meeting the Foundation’s eligibility requirements does not guarantee that the applicant organization will be awarded a grant.
STAGE FOUR: After receiving your application, we will reach out to you by telephone for any follow-up questions, and, pending the outcome of our review, will submit the project to the board of JBS Foundation for approval. We will inform you of the outcome of the board’s decision, and if you are approved for funding, will sign a Memorandum of Understanding, confirming the details of the grant and our reporting requirements.
